Green Flag ML Showdown: 'Imoreijo to Akureiso' vs. 'Munou Akujo' Manga Comparison

This Article Might Contain Spoiler

Thanks to the recent trend of manga adaptations with the “Villainous Lady” theme, we are seeing more and more stories built around this concept. A villainous lady (悪役令嬢, Akuyaku Reijou) refers to an antagonist character—usually a woman—who tries to steal the happiness of the heroine. These characters typically share a similar setting: a European medieval-style background, often with added magic elements.

In many cases, the story also includes the reincarnation trope (転生, tensei), where the protagonist is reborn inside an otome game world—destined to become the villainous lady. This type of character almost always faces a tragic ending.

To summarize, the “villainous lady” trope generally features:

  • A European medieval-style setting

  • Acting as the antagonist

  • Meddling with the heroine’s happiness

  • Ending in tragedy

That’s why, when a villainess resets her life or is reincarnated, she often chooses a different path to avoid the infamous “death flags.” As this theme evolved, new variations appeared. In some stories, the villainous lady is punished by being forced into a contract marriage with someone even more cunning than her—often being sent to live in a remote region. Surprisingly, in these cases, villainess sometimes “hits the jackpot,” turning the relationship into a green flag that leads to mutual understanding and eventual happiness.

With that in mind, let’s look at two manga series that follow this evolved trope:

  • 無能才女は悪女になりたい (Munou Saijo wa Akujo ni Naritai — 悪女, Akujo, meaning “wicked woman”)

  • 芋くさ令嬢ですが悪役令息を助けたら気に入られました (Imokusa Reijou desu ga Akuyaku Reisoku wo Tasuketara Kiniiraremashita)

Which series has the “greenest flag” romance? Let’s find out!

Story - Munou Saijo wa Akujo ni Naritai

Munou Saijo wa Akujo ni Naritai (無能才女は悪女になりたい) is a romance fantasy manga by Ichibu Saki and illustrated by Gotou Sora, following Avril Allingham, who is mistakenly labeled a “Wicked Woman” (悪女, Akujo) after Corina uses her name to cause trouble at a high-society party. Branded with a bad reputation, she is forced into marriage with the supposedly old Duke Lanchester—only to discover he is actually Dylan Lanchester, a young and handsome man who dotes on her endlessly. Although their marriage begins as a contract, Dylan quickly falls completely in love with Avril, with every panel showing just how head over heels he is for her.

Story - Imokusa Reijou desu ga Akuyaku Reisoku wo Tasuketara Kiniiraremashita

Imokusa Reijou desu ga Akuyaku Reisoku wo Tasuketara Kiniiraremashita (芋くさ令嬢ですが悪役令息を助けたら気に入られました), originally written by Sakura Ageha and illustrated in its manga adaptation by Nanaura Narina, follows Agnes Evanterre, a noblewoman known as an unfashionable lady due to her outdated dress and makeup. At a royal party, she meets Nazelbert, the crown princess’s fiancé, who kindly helps her when she trips over her heavy gown. The event turns chaotic when the crown princess publicly annuls her engagement to Nazelbert in favor of another man, accusing Nazelbert of cruelty. Humiliated and abandoned by all but Agnes, he is forced to marry her and move to a remote frontier as punishment. However, their marriage blossoms into a sweet and loving relationship—Agnes proves to be a true beauty with the right styling, and Nazelbert’s talents quickly bring prosperity to the frontier. In every panel, his deep consideration and affection for Agnes shine through.

Showdown : Dylan VS Nazelbert

Let’s see the action between those two gentleman who can win for title of the Greenest Forest Flag ML

1. Rumor Reaction and First Time Meeting

Nazelbert: He disregards rumors and shows compassion by helping Agnes during her downfall caused by a dress issue. He even suggests marrying her to take responsibility for his faults, indicating selflessness and integrity. This suggests Nazelbert is empathetic, quick to act honorably, and unaffected by societal gossip, which are strong qualities for a male lead.

Dylan: Initially uses rumors to orchestrate a contract marriage with Avril, suggesting a pragmatic or calculating side. His cold demeanor at the start may make him less approachable, potentially distancing him from Avril emotionally. While strategic, this approach lacks the warmth and sincerity Nazelbert displays.

Point : Nazelbert earns a point here for his genuine kindness and lack of judgment, which align with being a supportive and trustworthy partner. Dylan’s colder, rumor-driven approach feels less emotionally engaging, even if it sets up an intriguing dynamic. Point for Nazelbert.

2. Giving Gift in Secrets

Dylan: Expresses romance by secretly giving Avril a gift and praising her "evil lady" image to boost her confidence. This shows thoughtfulness, attention to her needs, and a nuanced understanding of her personality, which is highly romantic and tailored to Avril’s unique traits.

Nazelbert: Takes a more direct approach by bringing Agnes to see her gift, fostering a friendly and open dynamic. While this is sweet and transparent, it lacks the subtle, romantic flair of Dylan’s secretive gesture, which adds an element of mystery and personal care.

Point :  Dylan’s method feels more traditionally romantic, as it involves secrecy and a deep understanding of Avril’s insecurities, making her feel seen. Nazelbert’s approach is heartfelt but less romantically charged. Point for Dylan.

3. The Trauma

Page From Imokusa Reijou desu ga Akuyaku Reisoku wo Tasuketara Kiniiraremashita manga

Dylan: Carries trauma from his father’s infidelity, leading him to believe he doesn’t deserve happiness. This causes him to suppress his feelings for Avril, revealing them gradually. Despite his deep love for her from the start (even knowing about Corina’s swap), his internal struggle adds complexity but also emotional distance, as he takes time to open up.

Nazelbert: Suffers from low self-esteem due to his role as crown princess consort and the harsh training he endured, compounded by rejection of his ideas by Sutrena’s people. However, he actively seeks Agnes’s support, and her encouragement helps him resolve issues quickly. This shows resilience, openness, and a willingness to grow through partnership.

Point : Both characters have compelling backstories, but Nazelbert’s proactive approach to addressing his trauma through communication with Agnes highlights emotional maturity and trust in his partner. Dylan’s slower, more guarded expression of love, while sympathetic, can feel less resolved and more isolating for Avril. Nazelbert’s ability to lean on Agnes and move forward gives him an edge in emotional growth and partnership. Point for Nazelbert.

Final Evaluation

Score: Nazelbert: 2 points, Dylan: 1 point.

Nazelbert’s Strengths: He excels in sincerity, emotional openness, and partnership. His disregard for rumors and quick support for Agnes show a dependable and selfless nature. His handling of trauma through collaboration with Agnes demonstrates growth and trust, making him a strong, supportive male lead.

Dylan’s Strengths: Dylan shines in romantic subtlety, with his secret gift and tailored praise for Avril showing deep care and understanding. However, his trauma-driven emotional restraint and initial coldness make him less accessible as a partner compared to Nazelbert’s warmth and openness.

Considerations: The "Greenest Forest Flag ML" title suggests a male lead who is not only romantic but also admirable in character and growth. Nazelbert’s consistent support, emotional resilience, and partnership with Agnes make him more well-rounded. Dylan’s romantic gestures are compelling, but his slower emotional progress and initial coldness slightly detract from his overall appeal as a leading man.

Conclusion

Nazelbert wins for this battle's greenest forest flag  ML.  His combination of compassion, openness in addressing trauma, and supportive nature outweighs Dylan’s romantic but more reserved approach. Nazelbert’s ability to build a strong, communicative partnership with Agnes makes him the standout choice.
